- Status of Poplar in Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh (UP) there is only one representative of indigenous genus Populus, i.e. Populus ciliata. However, a number of exotic species and their clones were tried in UP since almost 50 years ago and after a decade of rigorous trials both in hills and plains (mainly Tarai region) only P. yunnanensis and P. deltoides were found most promising species respectively. In UP breeding of Poplar was also started successfully from 1982. By breeding, a number of new clones of Poplar have been developed and more than 30 clones have been found promising which have 25% to 70% more productivity than the exotic clones. Palynology is an established tool for age determination and correlation of sedimentary sequences. The palynomorphs retrieved from the Weller and Lashly formations of Allan Hills, central Transantarctic Mountains, South Victoria Land, Antarctica have been studied for precise age determination. Forty-five different groups of palynomorphs have been recovered from the Weller and Lashly formations. The palynoflora of Weller Formation shows dominance of striate bisaccate pollen taxa, mainly Striatopodocarpites, Faunipollenites (Protohaploxypinus), Crescentipollenites, Striatites and Verticipollenites in association with Horriditriletes, Cuneatisporites, Alisporites, Plicatipollenites, Gnetaecaepollenites, Sahnites, Tiwariasporis, Rhizomaspora, Pretricolpipollenites, Chordasporites and sporadic occurrence of Lundbladispora, Klausipollenites and Densoisporites. In the present study, a Late Permian age based on palynological evidences has been suggested for the Weller Formation, which was earlier assigned an Early Permian age. The Late Permian age of the Weller Formation is corroborated by similarity of its palynoassemblage with that of the Upper Stage-5 (Late Permian) of Australia. Additionally, the palynoflora of Weller Formation is comparable with the Late Permian palynoassemblages of India and South Africa. The younger palynoassemblage of the Lashly Formation contains Klausipollenites, Falcisporites and Alisporites in prominence and shows rare occurrence of Minutosaccus, Goubinispora, Lundbladispora, Densoisporites, Aulisporites and Chordasporites, indicating Early to Middle Triassic age and showing affiliation with Aratrisporites parvispinosus zone of Australia, Alisporites zone (A&B) of Feather Conglomerate and Fremouw Formation of Antarctica.Keywords

Heterogenous megaspores recovered from the Upper Permian sediments of Kuraloi Area, Ib-River coalfield, have been systematically described. The megaspore assemblage includes seven genera with seventeen species viz. Bokarosporites rotundus, Banksisporites indicus, B. utkalensis, Biharisporites spinosus, Biharisporites sp. A, Biharisporites sp. B, Jhariatriletes baculosus, J. srivastavae, J. damudicus, Manumisporites distinctus, Singhisporites baculatus, S. radialis, S. surangei, Ramispinatispora indica, R. nautiyalii and Ramispinatispora sp. Additionally, a new species of Ramispinatispora viz. R. mahanadiensis has been identified. Associated spore pollen assemblages are suggestive of a Late Permian age corresponding to Raniganj/Kamthi Formation. Raniganj megaspores are known from Damodar and Godavari Basins. The newly recorded megaspore assemblage from the Ib-River coalfield is comparable to that of Raniganj/Kamthi Formation of Godavari Graben. The diversity in exosporium ornamentations indicates structural diversity. Moreover, their prolific presence ultimately points towards occurrence of heterosporous source vegetation in the area.Keywords
